Governors

Welcome to the Governors' section.

Governors play a key role in the life of any school.  This importance is underlined in the three strategic functions that they are expected to deliver by the government and Ofsted.  These core functions are to -

* Ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction of the school.

* Hold the head-teacher to account for the school’s performance, the educational performance of pupils and the performance management of staff.

* Oversee the financial performance of the school, ensuring money is well spent.

It is important that we carry out these functions with a high degree of competence.  Furthermore, we also feel that it is very important that we have evidence that clearly shows what the impacts of our activities are.  At Northfield, we have decided to do this by creating our own Governor Action Plan which records our key activities and how they impact on the three strategic functions shown above. This action plan is reviewed and updated each term and the latest version is published below.

Northfield governors are very active in many areas of the school’s work and curriculum.  We know that our work, which includes providing both and support and constructive criticism, is much valued by the Head-teacher and her staff.  In turn, we feel that we are helping the school improve year on year.

The role of a governor is wide-ranging and can often be challenging particularly when we have to get to grips with new changes to the law or potentially unpopular instructions from government.  Having said all that, being a governor is also a very enjoyable and rewarding experience.

If you’re interested in becoming involved please contact me (chair of governors) via school or speak to the head-teacher.

New governors

We welcome new governors and want to help make their experience at Northfield both productive and enjoyable.

The induction process for new governors comprises an initial meeting with the Head-teacher to familiarise themselves with the school and its day to day running.  A meeting with the Chair of Governors will also be arranged to explain the role of governors and consider their input and impacts on the running of the school.

New governors will be invited to attend any or all of the governing body committees to see how and what business is conducted.  Governors will be encouraged to join any committee that they are interested in according to their skills, experience and interest.

A welcome pack will be given to all new governors containing

  • The School Improvement Plan

  • The Governor Profile document

  • The Governor Action Plan

  • Relevant DfE documents on the role of governors

  • Membership and contact details for the current governing body

  • Details of training opportunities

A buddy system is available where more experienced governors can provide support and act as mentors to new governors.  Arrangements will be made by the Chair in conjunction with the Training Co-ordinator on request.

The school’s website contains a considerable amount of information about the ethos of the school, how the school is organised, key performance data and details of the curriculum besides links to other important education sites.  New governors will be encouraged to familiarise themselves with the website and useful linked sites.

A bit about me..........

I am the governor representative nominated by the Local Authority, in this case Nottinghamshire County Council. I am very proud of my association with Northfield Primary and Nursery School and have been a governor here for over thirty years. I have been Chair of Governors since the “new” primary school was created back in 2000/1 and have seen the school expand and improve year on year.  This year, I am joint- chair of governors with Mrs J. Bradley as I intend to stand down from the chair at the end of this school year.

I am passionate about children having the best start to education they can be given and believe that everyone at Northfield, staff and governors, want this too.  I began my governorship as a parent and all my children passed through school, now my two granddaughters are in school and enjoying every minute.  It’s so rewarding to see children enjoying and benefitting from their time at school and I want to help ensure that every child in our school has a similar experience.

I am a member of the school’s Finance & Personnel Committee, Strategic Development Committee and oversee the headteacher’s Performance Management reviews. I am link governor for English and also support the six-monthly Health & Safety inspections. With our Headteacher and Mr C Charnley, I represent the school on the Joint Collaboration Committee which oversees the work of our five school collaboration.

I have no financial interest in the school’s business, claim no expenses and confirm that I am not a governor at any other school.

I joined the governing body as a co-opted governor in 2014. Since then I have enjoyed learning about the running of the school and understanding the challenges that school’s face on a day-to-day basis, particularly over the last few months of the pandemic.

My wife has been a teacher for many years so I understand the pressures put upon staff. I feel that my own work experience as a senior manager at the County Council and the skills I developed in the areas of assessment, performance and communication have helped with the role of Governor.

As a down-to –earth Yorkshireman I am keen to help in any way I can to ensure that the school provides the very best education, raises aspiration and acts as a launch pad for every child’s future.

I have no other business interests and I'm not a Governor of any other school.

Mrs Kirsten Evans

Parent Governor

Term of Office 20/03/2020 to 19/03/2024

Committees Finance and General Purpose, Strategic Development

Link Roles Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) and Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

I’ve lived and worked in the Mansfield area all of my life and, having attended local schools myself, I think that I have a good understanding of the local environment and local challenges/pressures. I am very passionate about the well-being and education of our next generation and, as a parent governor, I aspire to help Northfield to maintain its high standards and ensure that pupils have the best possible start in school. I have two young children myself, one at Northfield already and one due to start full-time school in the next academic year. I work in Operations Management within the private sector – with a broader background in management, finance and accounts, HR and administration. Joining the Governing Body during a pandemic has been a bit of a learning curve, but I’m pleased to have the opportunity to be a part of a great team and I’m enjoying learning more about the school. I hope that my skills and experience will be an asset to Northfield.

I have no business or financial interest in the school and I’m not a Governor at any other school.

Mrs June Ryan

Parent Governor

Service Ends 20/06/22

Parent Governor since 2010

Moved to Mansfield Woodhouse in 2005 from Birmingham, to bring children up in a less busy, more safer, friendly place of which Woodhouse and Northfield School are.

I have three children who have now moved on to Manor Academy and Manor College. All three have been happy and progressed well at Northfield. Since I became a Governor, I have learnt a lot more of what goes on to ensure every child is encouraged to do their best. I will as a Governor be there to help maintain this and ensure Northfield can be more than just a "Good" school.

I am also a relief Lunchtime Leader for the school as well as being trustee for local charity Little Roots.

Mrs Margaret Trewick

Co-opted Governor

Service Ends 01/11/2021

I was a member of staff at Northfield Primary & Nursery School for 20 years in a job that I loved before taking early retirement in February 2017.  Education has changed greatly since I started in 1996 but the ethos of Northfield has always remained the same.

I became a co-opted governor in November 2017 as I missed my Northfield ‘family’ and wanted to help in whatever way I could.  I am proud and privileged to be part of a team of people who are passionate and committed in ensuring the children at Northfield have the best education possible in a safe and welcoming environment.

I have no financial or business interests at the school and I am not a governor at any other school.

I joined the governing body in 2017 as a parent governor, I attended Northfield during my education and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. My daughter is currently a pupil in school and my son attended the school and has since moved onto the Manor Academy. I work as a project manager and believe that I can utilise my skills in order to help the school to continuously improve and raise the standards of education in my local community.

During my time as a governor, I have enjoyed learning about the day-to-day operation of the school; as well as working with the governing body, staff and parents to help the school achieve its goals.

In my spare time, I coach junior rugby union at Mansfield Rugby Club.

I have no business or financial interest in the school and I am not a governor at any other school.
