Governors

Welcome to the Governors' section.

Governors play a key role in the life of any school.  This importance is underlined in the three strategic functions that they are expected to deliver by the government and Ofsted.  These core functions are to -

* Ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction of the school.

* Hold the head-teacher to account for the school’s performance, the educational performance of pupils and the performance management of staff.

* Oversee the financial performance of the school, ensuring money is well spent.

It is important that we carry out these functions with a high degree of competence.  Furthermore, we also feel that it is very important that we have evidence that clearly shows what the impacts of our activities are.  At Northfield, we have decided to do this by creating our own Governor Action Plan which records our key activities and how they impact on the three strategic functions shown above. This action plan is reviewed and updated each term and the latest version is published below.

Northfield governors are very active in many areas of the school’s work and curriculum.  We know that our work, which includes providing both and support and constructive criticism, is much valued by the Head-teacher and her staff.  In turn, we feel that we are helping the school improve year on year.

The role of a governor is wide-ranging and can often be challenging particularly when we have to get to grips with new changes to the law or potentially unpopular instructions from government.  Having said all that, being a governor is also a very enjoyable and rewarding experience.

If you’re interested in becoming involved please contact me (chair of governors) via school or speak to the head-teacher.

Jayne Bradley

New governors

We welcome new governors and want to help make their experience at Northfield both productive and enjoyable.

The induction process for new governors comprises an initial meeting with the Head-teacher to familiarise themselves with the school and its day to day running.  A meeting with the Chair of Governors will also be arranged to explain the role of governors and consider their input and impacts on the running of the school.

New governors will be invited to attend any or all of the governing body committees to see how and what business is conducted.  Governors will be encouraged to join any committee that they are interested in according to their skills, experience and interest.

A welcome pack will be given to all new governors containing

  • The School Improvement Plan

  • The Governor Profile document

  • The Governor Action Plan

  • Relevant DfE documents on the role of governors

  • Membership and contact details for the current governing body

  • Details of training opportunities

A buddy system is available where more experienced governors can provide support and act as mentors to new governors.  Arrangements will be made by the Chair in conjunction with the Training Co-ordinator on request.

The school’s website contains a considerable amount of information about the ethos of the school, how the school is organised, key performance data and details of the curriculum besides links to other important education sites.  New governors will be encouraged to familiarise themselves with the website and useful linked sites.

MEET THE GOVERNORS

Our school governing body consists of 13 members: 1 x Head Teacher, 1 x Staff Governors, 6 x Co-opted Governors, 4 x Parent Governors and 1 x Local Authority Governor.

Mrs Jayne Bradley

Local Authority Governor, Chair.

Committees: Finance and General Purpose Comittee. Pupil and Strategic Development Committee (Chair). JCC

First appointed 31/07/2014

Service Ends 30/07/26

I have been a governor at Northfield school for the past 28 years. I began as a parent governor as my 3 children attended the school and am currently a co-opted governor and chair.

I trained as a nursery nurse and worked at the school as a teaching assistant for a number of years. I then had a change of career and worked in the charity sector with the elderly and vulnerable, before retiring in 2018.

I have always been interested in children and love being around them, and believe that a good and varied education is important to all children.

I am a member of the school’s Finance & Personnel committee, Strategic Development committee and this year have taken part in the Head Teacher’s performance management review. I also have link governor roles for SENCO, Child Protection, Safeguarding/Safer Recruitment, and Behaviour & Attendance.

I have no business or financial interest at the school and I am not a Governor at any other school.

Mrs Kirsten Evans

Parent Governor, Joint Vice Chair.

First appointed 20/03/2020

Term of Office 19/03/2024 to 18/03/2028

Committees Finance and General Purpose, Strategic Development

Link Roles Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) and Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

I’ve lived and worked in the Mansfield area all of my life and, having attended local schools myself, I think that I have a good understanding of the local environment and local challenges/pressures. I am very passionate about the well-being and education of our next generation and, as a parent governor, I aspire to help Northfield to maintain its high standards and ensure that pupils have the best possible start in school. I have two young children myself, one at Northfield already and one due to start full-time school in the next academic year. I work in Operations Management within the private sector – with a broader background in management, finance and accounts, HR and administration. Joining the Governing Body during a pandemic has been a bit of a learning curve, but I’m pleased to have the opportunity to be a part of a great team and I’m enjoying learning more about the school. I hope that my skills and experience will be an asset to Northfield.

I have no business or financial interest in the school and I’m not a Governor at any other school.

Mrs June Ryan

Co-Opted Governor

First appointed: 25/02/2010

Service Ends 19/06/26

Committees: Finance, Personnel and General Purpose Committee. Pupil and Strategic Development Committee.

Parent Governor since 2010 became a co-opted Governor in 2022

Moved to Mansfield Woodhouse in 2005 from Birmingham, to bring children up in a less busy, more safer, friendly place of which Woodhouse and Northfield School are.

I have three children who have now moved on to Manor Academy and Manor College. All three have been happy and progressed well at Northfield. Since I became a Governor, I have learnt a lot more of what goes on to ensure every child is encouraged to do their best. I will as a Governor be there to help maintain this and ensure Northfield can be more than just a "Good" school.

I am also a relief Lunchtime Leader for the school as well as being trustee for local charity Little Roots.

Mr Andrew Bradley

Co-opted Governor

First appointed: 31/07/2014

Service Ends 30/07/26

Committees: Finance, Personnel and General Purposes Committee (Chair)

I have been a governor at Northfield for over 25 years. My 3 children attended Northfield and I now have a grandson at the school. I was born in Mansfield, have always lived in the area and moved to Mansfield Woodhouse in 1984.

I retired in early 2020 after a career as a qualified Management Accountant, initially in the coal industry and then with the NHS in Derby.

I am chair of the school’s Finance & Personnel Committee and a member of the Pay Committee. I also have a governor role in the Head Teacher’s Appraisal process and am a link governor for History.

I have no business or financial interest at the school and I am not a Governor at any other school.

Mrs Margaret Trewick

Co-opted Governor

First appointed 02/11/2017

Service Ends 01/11/2025

Committees: Finance, Personnel and General Purposes Committee

I was a member of staff at Northfield Primary & Nursery School for 20 years in a job that I loved before taking early retirement in February 2017.  Education has changed greatly since I started in 1996 but the ethos of Northfield has always remained the same.

I became a co-opted governor in November 2017 as I missed my Northfield ‘family’ and wanted to help in whatever way I could.  I am proud and privileged to be part of a team of people who are passionate and committed in ensuring the children at Northfield have the best education possible in a safe and welcoming environment.

I have no financial or business interests at the school and I am not a governor at any other school.

Mr David Woodcock

I joined the governing body in 2017 as a parent governor, I attended Northfield during my education and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. My daughter is currently a pupil in school and my son attended the school and has since moved onto the Manor Academy. I work as a project manager and believe that I can utilise my skills in order to help the school to continuously improve and raise the standards of education in my local community.

During my time as a governor, I have enjoyed learning about the day-to-day operation of the school; as well as working with the governing body, staff and parents to help the school achieve its goals.

In my spare time, I coach junior rugby union at Mansfield Rugby Club.

I have no business or financial interest in the school and I am not a governor at any other school.

I am delighted to be the Head Teacher of Northfield Primary and Nursery School, a position I have held since 2001. I believe passionately in providing an educational environment where every child feels safe, secure, happy and motivated to learn. I aim to provide a creative and exciting curriculum therefore giving every child the opportunity to succeed and reach their potential.

I am privileged to lead a forward looking school into a future where, together, we continually strive to provide the support, opportunities and challenge which change and improve children's lives forever. To enable this to happen I strongly believe in the school and community working in partnership for the benefit of all.

A bit about me: Northfield was the school that I attended and although we do not live in catchment I wanted my boys to experience the school life that I did, I have lots of great memories about my time but I still love the space that the children have to run and play as well as the use of Forest Schools and GLOW days which my youngest who has autism particulary enjoys.

When the opportunity arose to become a governor, I jumped at it as I wanted to help maintain the school values and beliefs but also to support the Head, teachers and support staff. The school is a community within a community and we all have a role to play in making sure that our children are happy and comfortable in their learning environments and that their teachers and support staff are actively engaged in making sure that every child is working to their own level.
