Governors

Welcome to the Governors' section.

Governors play a key role in the life of any school.  This importance is underlined in the three strategic functions that they are expected to deliver by the government and Ofsted.  These core functions are to -

* Ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction of the school.

* Hold the head-teacher to account for the school’s performance, the educational performance of pupils and the performance management of staff.

* Oversee the financial performance of the school, ensuring money is well spent.

It is important that we carry out these functions with a high degree of competence.  Furthermore, we also feel that it is very important that we have evidence that clearly shows what the impacts of our activities are.  At Northfield, we have decided to do this by creating our own Governor Action Plan which records our key activities and how they impact on the three strategic functions shown above. This action plan is reviewed and updated each term and the latest version is published below.

Northfield governors are very active in many areas of the school’s work and curriculum.  We know that our work, which includes providing both and support and constructive criticism, is much valued by the Head-teacher and her staff.  In turn, we feel that we are helping the school improve year on year.

The role of a governor is wide-ranging and can often be challenging particularly when we have to get to grips with new changes to the law or potentially unpopular instructions from government.  Having said all that, being a governor is also a very enjoyable and rewarding experience.

If you’re interested in becoming involved please contact me (chair of governors) via school or speak to the head-teacher.

Northfield Governors action plan

New governors

We welcome new governors and want to help make their experience at Northfield both productive and enjoyable.

The induction process for new governors comprises an initial meeting with the Head-teacher to familiarise themselves with the school and its day to day running.  A meeting with the Chair of Governors will also be arranged to explain the role of governors and consider their input and impacts on the running of the school.

New governors will be invited to attend any or all of the governing body committees so see how and what business is conducted.  Governors will be encouraged to join any committee that they are interested in according to their skills, experience and interest.

A welcome pack will be given to all new governors containing

  • The School Improvement Plan

  • The Governor Profile document

  • The Governor Action Plan

  • Relevant DfE documents on the role of governors

  • Membership and contact details for the current governing body

  • Details of training opportunities

A buddy system is available where more experienced governors can provide support and act as mentors to new governors.  Arrangements will be made by the Chair in conjunction with the Training Co-ordinator on request.

The school’s website contains a considerable amount of information about the ethos of the school, how the school is organised, key performance data and details of the curriculum besides links to other important education sites.  New governors will be encouraged to familiarise themselves with the website and useful linked sites.

A bit about me..........

I retired in 2011 after 36 years working for Nottinghamshire County Council. My last post was as head of Service for Highway Safety where I was responsible for all aspects of road safety from school crossing patrols to safety cameras. I have extensive experience in managing budgets, staff performance and appraisal, policy development and communications. I have been a governor for almost 30 years and Chair since the school’s creation in 2001. Previously, I was Chair of Northfield Infant and Nursery School. My three children all came to school here and three of my grandchildren now attend. I am also a product of the Cox’s Lane Infant School as it was originally known in the 1950s.  I have strong connections and commitment to both the school and local community and I am passionate about giving our children the very best start to their education.  I would like to see the school become “outstanding” whilst maintaining a secure and happy learning environment where children enjoy their learning.

I have no business or financial interest at the school, and I am not a Governor at any other school.

Mrs Dionne Henry

Parent Governor

Mrs Dionne Henry – Parent Governor

Who you are and what your connection is with the school?

My name is Mrs Dionne Henry and I am currently a parent governor at Northfield Primary and Nursery School.  My daughter Lily, is currently in Mrs Moriarty’s class in Y1, soon to move to Y2 with Miss Gelsthorpe.   I have lived in Mansfield Woodhouse all my life, went to Robin Hood, then to Manor.   I worked for Mansfield Brewery when leaving school for 10 years, then Nottinghamshire County Council in Education for 11 years, actually working in Governor Services, so I had a clear insight what I was letting myself in for!  Since August 2014 I have worked at Kings Mill Hospital, first in the Nurse Bank Office, then Clinic Prep and for the past year I have worked as a Clinical Typist, which I enjoy.

Why is education important?

Education is very important to all children, as this is the starting block into life, not only academically but socially and emotionally.  It will help shape the person they want to become.

Your experience as a Governor/ what I like about Northfield

I can say hand on heart I love my time as a governor at Northfield, we are a very good team and work hard behind the scenes, supporting Julie and staff.   Some of it can ‘blow your mind’ but we will bring our own strengths to the table.  Other governors are always willing to support you.

What sort of school do I want Northfield to be?

I want Northfield Primary and Nursery to be the best.  Not just in its role as a school but also in the community.

I am not a governor on any other school and I have no financial interest to declare in the school.

Mr Chris Charnley

Co-opted Governor

Service Ends 05/11/18

I joined the governing body as a co-opted governor in 2014 and it has been a steep learning curve.
Over the last two years I have enjoyed learning about the running of the school and understanding the challenges that school’s face on a day-to-day basis.
My wife has been a teacher for many years so I understand the pressures put upon staff. I feel that my own work experience as a senior manager at the County Council and the skills I have developed in the areas of assessment, performance and communication will help with the role of Governor.
As a down-to –earth Yorkshireman I am keen to help in any way I can to ensure that the school provides the very best education, raises aspiration and acts as a launch pad for every child’s future.

I have no other business interests and I'm not a Governor of any other school.

Mrs Sue  Bowskill

Parent Governor

Service ends 29/11/2017

I joined the Governing Body as a parent governor in 2011 when my children, who were students of Northfield, were in years 3 and 1.  Professionally I work full time for the National Health Service and am a busy wife and mum. I have always been local to Mansfield Woodhouse and I attended Northfield myself (many years ago!). Education is important to give all children a platform on which to base their whole lives, even from deciding which 'task' to choose at Foundation level is teaching the children decision making skills even when they do not realise.  Through being a governor I have had more insight into how all the staff and teachers at Northfield are so passionate and enthusiastic about their jobs and the children they teach and support.

I have no business or financial interest at the school.

I am not a Governor at any other school.

Mrs June Ryan

Parent Governor

Service Ends 24/02/18

Parent Governor since 2010

Moved to Mansfield Woodhouse in 2005 from Birmingham, to bring children up in a less busy, more safer, friendly place of which Woodhouse and Northfield School are.

I have three children of which two have moved on to Manor Academy. All three have been happy and progressed well at Northfield. Since I became a Governor, I have learnt a lot more of what goes on to ensure every child is encouraged to do their best. I will as a Governor be there to help maintain this and ensure Northfield can be more than just a "Good" school.

I am also a relief Lunchtime Leader for the school as well as being trustee for local charity Little Roots.

Mr David Annis

Staff Governor

Service End Date 16/11/17

I started working as caretaker at Northfield Infants School in 1993, I became a governor of the school in 1998.

Northfield is a warm, welcoming, safe environment where children can achieve their best, have fun and make friendships, many of which will last a lifetime. I hope I can do my bit in both my roles to ensure it continues.

I have no business or financial interest at the school.

I am not a Governor at any other school.
