Reading
Reading Progression Plan
At Northfield, reading is regarded as a crucial life skill and is at the heart of everything we do. By focusing on the five pillars of reading (phonemic awareness, phonic knowledge, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension), we aim to provide our pupils with the necessary tools to read for pleasure, to read independently, to read for meaning and for information.
Our school's phonics scheme - Rocket Phonics - supports children as they learn their phonemes, which are the building blocks to decoding and blending. Daily whole class guided reading in years 2 to 6, provides quality first teaching, enabling pupils to build on their understanding and develop their reading skills. Our intent is to provide an adaptive, inclusive reading curriculum that is designed to help all pupils, including disadvantaged and SEND, make progress.
We offer our pupils a wide range of books covering diverse themes to capture their interest, develop their knowledge of the world and increase their cultural capital. We want our pupils to develop a love of literature and a resilience and stamina in reading that will equip them for life as they progress into secondary school and beyond.
