Geography
At Northfield Primary and Nursery School, through a high-quality geography curriculum, it is our intention that pupils become passionate, educated geographers who build locational knowledge, place knowledge, and the knowledge of human and physical processes and geographical skills. One of the key curriculum drivers: Four Corners of the World: school, local, national and global, provides a focus for this.
Our aim is to inspire pupils with a curiosity and fascination about the world and the people in it; to promote their interest and understanding of diversity in places and people, resources and an understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human characteristics. Key enquiry questions for each unit of work introduce pupils to geographical questions with the geography curriculum planned to ensure pupils make progress, are able to answer the key questions and develop as geographers.
Pupils will be provided with opportunities to take their learning beyond the classroom, allowing them to enrich their cultural capital and geographical knowledge by exploring their local area and visiting places beyond their local community. As our geography curriculum enables pupils to develop geographical knowledge and skills, pupils can develop their skills by interpreting a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs and collecting and reading geographical data. Also, pupils will learn and then use a range of geographical vocabulary to support them in developing a secure knowledge and combined appreciation of both substantive and disciplinary knowledge that can be described as geographical understanding.
